On Friday morning finally the highlight of our 20th anniversary program took place: the anniversary ceremony and the inauguration of the new annex were celebrated on the school grounds of CDSC in the presence of many VIP guests, among them Her Royal Majesty the Princess of Lanna and the German Ambassador in Bangkok Rolf Schulze.

After the guests have been welcomed with a drink and the first photos of handing over presents and flower arrangements had been taken at 9.00 am the anniversary ceremony started in the gymnasium which could hardly be recognized on this day with the big stage, two projector screens and the beautiful flower arrangements.

As being common in the Kingdom of Thailand, the celebration was started with the King’s anthem which was underlined visually by an impressive photo show via projector. In order to attune the audience to the following program a short video clip presenting the history of CDSC with a lot of pictures of the first school years after the foundation in 1994 has been shown.

Afterwards, the chairman of the school board David Nescholta opened the celebration officially together with the Thai licenscee Adjarn Supapporn who translated the welcome speech into Thai. He welcomed especially the VIP guests - some of them had even travelled the long way from Germany to Chiang Mai to attend the celebration: The German Ambassador in Bangkok Rolf Schulze and the cultural referent of the German Embassy Annette Sévery, the director of the Foundation Marburger Mission Rainer Becker and his colleague Christina Schuh, the Thai Honorary Counsel in Stuttgart Marianne Zorn, the general secretary of the Church of Christ in Thailand (CCT) Adjarn Sayam Muangsak, the Aisan appointee of the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZfA) Heribert Wegmann, the director of the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce Jörg Buck, two of the former principles of CDSC Fred Hartmann and Matthias Wolf and two of the school founders Prof. Dr. Immanuel Scharrer and Kees Brouwer. Especially honored we felt by the surprise visit of Her Royal Majesty the Princess of Lanna!

The welcoming speech was followed by the greeting speeches of our special guests: the MM director Rainer Becker, the German Ambassador Rolf Schulze, the general secretary of the CCT Adjarn Sayam Muangsak, the representative of the the ZfA Heribert Wegmann and - last but not least - the principle of the CDSC Bastian Liebold. The German Ambassador took the opportunity to hand over the certificate of “Excellent German School Abroad” to the principle and the chairman of the school board which the CDSC had acquired by succefully completing the “Bund-Länder-Insepektion”, a school inspection of the German government in 2013.

The sequence of greeting speeches was enriched by several impressive, creative musical and acting performances of the students: Since the festivity program of a German school started with the King’s anthem in order to honor the host country the German anthem should come at least in the second place. Thus, Kristina Häger had rehearsed the German anthem in the classical kind of a string quartett with four students. Seven girls of the elementary school performed a Thai dance in classy, traditional Thai costumes. Enthusiastically the audience applauded after the students of the elementary school had been singing to a self-written text along to the melody of “Eine kleine Nachtwusik” by W. A. Mozart directed by her music teacher Mrs. Häger. The very impressive last musical part of the program was prepared by a stundets orchestra and a students choir who performed - again directed by Kristina Häger - “Freude schöner Götterfunken” of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Again, Mrs Häger made a very good job of it!

After the anniversary celebration program the guests gathered in front of the annex for the inauguration ceremony. After three strokes of an old Thai gong the German Ambassador Rolf Schulze, MM director Rainer Becker and the general secretary of the CCT Adjarn Sayam Muangsak cut the cord of the front door and thus inaugurated the new building officially.

One thing, of course, is very important in the context of any celebration in Thailand: good food! Starting from 12 am a buffet offering salad, the common German disch “Gulasch” soup and the famous Thai noodle disch “Phad Thai” was opened in the gymnasium which had meanwhile been decorated with many flying balloons and had been equipped with tables and chairs.

The anniversary program was made perfect by round tours through the new annex offered after lunch in German, Thai and English.

We are very thankful for the anniversary committee directed by the chairman of the school board David Nescholta who has been preparing the anniversary for almost one year in advance and thus given the school an amazing, atmospheric celebration. Grateful we are as well for the good weather which probably can not be ascribed the careful planning of the anniversary committee. Very glad we are about the coming of the responsible organazations - the MM and the CCT - and further friends of the CDSC who showed us their support and shared our joy over the last twenty years of CDSC history! We are curious about the upcoming twenty years...
